Early life
Sherawat was born Reema Lamba in Rohtak, Haryana to a Jat family. She adopted the screen name of "Mallika", meaning "empress", to avoid confusion with other actresses named Reema. "Sherawat" is her mother's maiden name. She has stated that she uses her mother's maiden name because of the support that her mother has provided her. She went to school at Delhi Public School, Mathura Road. She has obtained a degree in philosophy from Miranda House, Delhi University. During initial days of her career, she often claimed that she came from a very conservative small town family, her mother trashed her when she applied lipstick, her father was an authoritarian landlord and in her small town in Rohtak, women were treated like cattles and her mother wore veil. She also claimed that she got married to one Capt. Gill from Delhi on the persistence of her family. However Mallika's family has refuted her story as lies created by her to give her an aura of a small town rustic girl who made it big in big bad Bollywood. When her father, Mukesh Kumar Lamba, questioned her she is said to have replied that "Papa, filmon mein yeh sab kehna padta hai achchi publicity ke liye." (Father, in film industry you have to do these stuff for publicity). Mallika has often stated that she changed her first name to avoid confusion with contemporaries like Raima Sen, Reema Sen and Rimi Sen. Friends say she opted for the uncommon surname Sherawat (a modification of her mother’s maiden name Sehrawat) for its distinctive sound and not, as Mallika later said, because of her strained relationship with her father and his relatives. She got married soon after college to a boy of her choice, Jet Airways pilot Captain Karan Singh Gill and not because her parents pressurised her. Glamour photographers recall that Reema Gill, as she was known then, would avoid any mention of her husband, even deny being married. Her publicity statements also got her father in trouble as he had to spent a lot of time pacifying angry relatives when Mallika has said in interviews, "I come from a place where women are kept in the backyard along with cattle"; that her parents "fled from Rohtak" because relatives disapproved of her career choice; and again, "In my family, no woman has even held a job."
